How To Fill Out A Passport Application

How To Fill Out A Passport Application

One of the most stressful parts of the passport application process is simply going through all of the paperwork. This step-by-step guide will help you fill out an application for a new passport.

Step 1- Gather the Required Documents

You can’t apply for a US passport without documents that prove you are who you say you are and that you are a US citizen. Here are the documents you will need:

Proof of Identity:

A U.S. Passport (can be expired or current); a U.S. passport card; driver’s license; Certificate of Naturalization, Certificate of Citizenship; military identification; or a federal, state, or municipal government employee ID card. Also, make a clear photocopy of your ID to submit with your application.

Proof of Citizenship:

If you were born in the US, a previously issued passport or a certified birth certificate with a raised seal will suffice. If you are a naturalized citizen, you may submit your naturalization certificate or Certificate of Citizenship. If you were born abroad to US citizen parents, you’ll need your foreign birth certificate or a Consular Report of Birth, plus other additional documentation of your parents’ US citizenship and US residency. Read page 2 of the application instructions for details on what is required.

Step 2- Gather the Required Information

To complete the US passport application, you need to know your parent’s full names and where they were born. You also need to gather documentation to support any name changes if your current name differs from the document you are using as proof of citizenship. .

Step 3: Complete the Application

Complete the application in your most perfect penmanship, using a pen with black ink. If the Department of State is unable to read your handwriting, you application could be delayed or declined.

If you have a computer with a printer, you may also choose to complete the application online and print it. This is the best option, as it will prevent your application from being rejected if your handwriting is less than perfect.

You should fill out the application completely, but DO NOT sign it at this time.

Step 4: Go to a Passport Acceptance Facility To Submit Your Application

Next, use the US Department of State’s website to look up the nearest passport acceptance office. These are usually located in places like post offices and libraries. Take your application along with all the supporting documents you have gathered and 2 passport photos. The acceptance agent will make you swear an oath stating that the information on your application is correct and you are eligible to possess a US passport. Then, you will sign the passport application, pay the requested fees and the acceptance agent will send your paperwork to the Department of State for processing.

Grand Canyon Skywalk's Real Cost of Admission

Grand Canyon Skywalk's Real Cost of Admission

If you are visiting Las Vegas, the Grand Canyon Skywalk is a must-see attraction. Tickets to the Glass Bridge average about $25 per person. However, depending on how you get to the Bridge, there are additional costs you’ll want to be aware of. Here are the most common:
Parking Fee
Las Vegas is just 120 east of the West Rim, making this a 2.5 hour trip by car. The last 15 miles are on dirt road, and can be rough and rocky. If you rent a car, it’s advised you end up picking an SUV (sports utility vehicle) with high clearance. There’s a parking lot at the end of the road, and all-day parking will run you $20.
Park Entrance Fee
The Hualapai Indians own the land on which the Skywalk was built. To go in, it is necessary to purchase a permit called a Legacy Pass:
Adults: $43.05
Kids (3-11 years): $35.03
Senior/Military: $39.85
The Pass includes unlimited shuttle bus use, which stops at the Skywalk, Eagle Point, Guano Point, and Hualapai Ranch.
Grand Canyon Skywalk Tickets
Currently, tickets to the Skywalk are:
Adults: $29.95
Kids (3-11 years): $22.46
Senior/Military: $39.85
This entitles you to unlimited one-day access to the Bridge.
Photos
You are not allowed to bring any personal electronics onto the Skywalk, including digital cameras, mobile phones, and digital video recorders. Professional photographers are on the scene to snap photos of you. Cost per photo is $30. Quality? Professional.
Lockers
Secure lockers for your personal belongings are $3.
Fuel Surcharges
Fee was implemented by Las Vegas tour companies to cover the cost of fuel, which spiked in 2008. Most operators have discontinued the fee. Read the agreement of your tour before purchase.
The Real Cost
It doesn’t matter how you slice it, your base cost to visit Grand Canyon Skywalk as an adult is:
Park Entrance Fee: $43.05
Skywalk Ticket: $29.95
Total: $73
If you rent a car, add the following costs:
Rental Car (one day, Sport Utility Vehicle): $60
Gas (full tank): $50
Parking: $20
Total: $130
Many people opt to take a bus or helicopter tour from Las Vegas to the Skywalk. Bus tours start at $95 (includes lunch, park entrance fee) and require you to only pay for your Skywalk ticket. Helicopter tours begin at $350 and include VIP admission to the Bridge and park entrance fee. Bus tours take a full day; helicopters require half a day. Most of these tours can be upgraded to include, amongst other things, a helicopter ride to the bottom of the Grand Canyon or a pontoon boat cruise on the Colorado River.
More than a million people have experienced the Glass Bridge since it opened in 2007. The structure extends 70 feet beyond the West Rim of the Grand Canyon, suspending the visitor some 4,000 feet above the Colorado River. The Bridge can support more than 800 people at one time, but maximum occupancy is 120 people. Buying a ticket to this fabulous attraction is pretty much a straightforward proposition. It’s how you choose to get to the Glass Bridge where you have to do your homework. Using a rental car has its own set of unique costs (car rental, gas, parking, etc.). Same goes for taking a bus or helicopter tour from Las Vegas. Pick the one that fits your travel budget the best. Then make your way to the Grand Canyon Skywalk, one of Las Vegas’ most popular day trips and attractions.

Three Questions you Should Ask yourself Before Moving Overseas

Three Questions you Should Ask yourself Before Moving Overseas

Crossing cultures by going and living abroad is not for the fainthearted. I can still remember the first morning I woke up after moving to Amsterdam in 1986 to do post-graduate studies and asking myself ā€œwhat in the world am I doing hereā€?

How can you know for certain if going and living overseas is the right thing for you and if you are married if it is the right thing to do for you and your family. Well, you’ll probably never know with absolute certainty until you actually move and spend a year or two abroad. But based on my 20 years living and working as an American in Europe I can offer 3 tips which you should consider before making the decision to move.

1) Why?

What drives a person to go and live abroad will probably be the single most important factor as to whether or not a person ā€œsurvivesā€ a long-term overseas experience and actually makes a success of it. Many individuals who decide to go overseas are ill-prepared for the many challenges that await them as they encounter a culture that is different from the one they grew up in. Depending on the country you live in seemingly little things like navigating the supermarket can become a major ordeal, especially if you do not speak the local language. Adventure seekers be warned. When the going gets tough, and it will, it’s the sense of purpose, drive and commitment to the task that made you go in the first place that will enable you to endure the loneliness, misunderstandings and missing the familiar that await you. Do some serious soul-searching and examine your reasons for wanting to move abroad before making that important decision. Also, ask a trusted friend or family member to test your motives.

2) Where?

There may be some cases when you don’t have a choice on where you move. For example, if your company sends you on an overseas assignment or you work for the state department or military and are assigned a specific overseas post you may have very little if any say on where you end up. However, in these cases you will likely be part of an infrastructure that provides the support network you need to make a more seamless transition into life overseas. On the other hand, if you move abroad to study or apply for a job that means moving overseas consider the country you will be moving to. If you were born and raised in the United States and move to Europe as I did, the transition will be bumpy and life will be hard at times, especially the early years, but if you are adaptable and outgoing you will probably survive. However, moving to the African continent or Asia will present numerous challenges that will be unfamiliar to a person raised in a western culture. Do your homework and learn everything there is to know about the country you are moving to including local customs, the history, predominate religion, climate and government system. This may all seem obvious but I was amazed by the number of foreigners I met during my years in Europe who knew almost nothing about the local culture, its customs and people before they moved there.

3) When?

This may seem like an odd question but actually timing is everything, especially when it involves an international move with a family. If the timing is not right and you are not adequately prepared you will be in for a very rough ride. My daughter was 14 years old when we left The Netherlands, where she was born and spent her early years, to move to England. While you may think Great Britain and The Netherlands are the same because they are part of the same continent, they are actually far more different than you could imagine. The first year we lived in England was miserable for my 14 year old as she tried to adapt to a new high school and language. Had we moved a year or two earlier her life and ours would have been much easier.

If you have a children that will be attending local schools and not a private American or British school, my advice is not to move when your children have already reached High School age. The younger your children are the easier it will be for your family to adapt and the less strain it will be on you as a parent trying to help them adjust. If they attend a private British or American school, age is less important because they will transition into a school system and language that is familiar to them.

These three questions may not come as a surprise to the causal reader who is thinking about moving overseas. However, when considering a major transition to living in a different culture asking yourself why, when and where and being honest about the answers will make a huge difference in helping you to make the right decision about whether or not to move abroad.
