Realistic Expectations for Holiday Planning

Realistic Expectations for Holiday Planning

When planning out any holiday, it’s very important that your expectations of the activities are actually realistic. This is especially true during the upcoming holiday season, when everyone wants a piece of your family’s attention for themselves.
This is where the all too frequent question asked in school “Why do I need math as a grown-up?” comes in. If you’re supposed to be eating at Grandma’s at 1pm, but Aunt Helen and Uncle Jim are supposed to be arriving for dinner at 4pm, are you really giving yourself enough time to get everything done, without cutting things short?
Have you planned for unexpected drop-in visitors to your own home? Can you realistically have brunch with the kids at home on Christmas morning and still make it for dinner at Aunt Fay’s (who happens to live 2 hours away, and it was just announced on the weather to expect snow again)?
Write out each and every plan you have going for the holiday season. Include travel time, the amount of time you expect to stay and visit, what meals you’ll be eating, clean-up time…everything! Then start counting the hours.
Remember, no matter where you live on the planet, there are only 24 hours in a day. If your plans add up to more than that, you’ve already got trouble. Not to mention the important factor of getting some sleep sometime between December 23rd and January 2nd.
Also, even if you have teenagers, expecting them to eat four holiday dinners in one day, every day for a week might be a bit much. If neither of these problems seem apparent on your list, congratulate yourself! You’re one of the lucky ones.
It’s ok to cut back on trips. Consider having those people over for a buffet-style dinner at your home instead. Not every pie or cake needs to be homemade. Why not go potluck and have each family member bring something to go on the buffet table, saving you some precious time and energy?
Planning holiday activities can be done. Besides, it’s the holiday season for you too!

Camaro Rentals and Other Performance Rides You Want to Rent

Camaro Rentals and Other Performance Rides You Want to Rent

After renting cars for over a dozen years I’ve come to have very specific expectations about the whole rental car experience. I expect the car to be clean and get me to my destination in relative comfort. What I don’t expect is an exciting driving experience that I would want to share with everyone. Please understand I’m not unhappy I just don’t normally equate fun-to-drive with your average rental.

Rental car companies have real performance cars

I understand that car rental companies such as Avis, Budget and Hertz also include in their fleets rental cars that you do want to drive. These cars include models such as the Nissan 350Z, Ford Mustang and Chevy Camaro. Avis calls their special car class Cool Cars while Budget has the Budget Street Fleet and Hertz has its Fun Collection.

The challenge to renting one of these special cars will be finding an available car for your destination. Rental cars companies typically have limited numbers of these cars in their fleet. Which means don’t expect to be able to rent a Camaro right at the rental car counter. Chances are one won’t be available when you want it. But don’t worry renting a performance car isn’t that hard but it will take a little planning because rental car companies usually make these types of cars available in areas where they are most popular.

Finding the rental you want

What worked well for me was to start with the rental car company sites and their car guide section. I’ve been interested in trying out the new 2010 Camaro. I narrowed my choice to Avis Cool Cars and Budget Street Fleet since they carried both the Camaro LT and Camaro SS (the V8 version). Avis offers the Camaro in over sixty cities throughout the U.S. including Atlanta, Miami and Los Angeles. My travel plans for the next month included a trip to Los Angeles so I booked the Camaro SS.

When I finally got behind the wheel of the Camaro rental I was pleasantly surprised to find this was no stripped down car. The Camaro completely lived up to the buzz. Renting a higher-end car does come with a premium rate. But I think the higher rate was more than offset by the drivability of the car. If renting a Camaro or other performance car sounds like an option then remember to book early because these cars are definitely in demand.

TEFL, teaching English abroad, lesson plans, classroom activities

There are lots of newly qualified teachers on chalkboard who are about to embark not only on the adventure of a lifetime, but also on an exciting new career. I know as a new teacher I had lots of anxieties such as:

– Oh my god, what am I doing??!

– Is this the right choice for me?

– Will I be a good teacher?

– I can’t remember anything I did on my course!!

– How am I going to be able to stand in front of a class and even pretend to be confident??

…to name but a few!!!  But you’ll be pleased to know that I survived and you will too!

Anyhow, I decided it would be a good idea to create some activities that I thought might be useful for you guys when you start teaching.  These are all activities I have done in class, which I find to be effective and which students enjoy.  So take a look… hopefully you will have some elementary classes in which you can use them – and if not, you can see some examples of different types of activities you can do.  For a lot of TEFL jobs out there you will be expected to create similar materials of your own.

Of course there are many, many activities you can do – this is just a taster!  So I hope you find them useful.  There are also some detailed notes for new teachers on how to use the activities, which will hopefully help you to produce fabulous lessons….

Feel free to ask any questions about how to use them in your classes. And as always if you have any questions in general, I’m always at hand to help as best I can J

Oh and the best news is that it’s FREE…. so click here to check it out!
