Blend In When Travelling

Blend In When Travelling

Whether you backpack in Europe or journey in royal style through India, blending in when travelling is key to make the most out of your experience, be it in terms of enjoyment or learning. Local people generally are highly appreciative of visitors who take a genuine interest in their culture. Make an effort to reach out to them. Take a few lessons from the locals and feel yourself at home!

– Do research on your destination (background info on the culture as well as what is currently going on)

– Read up on the history of your destination (understand where the things you will see are coming from and how they came about)

– Talk to anyone in your personal network who travelled there (learn about the best and worst experiences and develop a feel for your destination)

– Learn key phrases in the language of your destination (make yourself understood and connect to the people)

– Absorb the culture using all five senses (listen to the symphony of sounds, watch the kaleidoscope of colours, feel the fabrics, smell the spices, and taste the delicacies)

– Observe carefully how locals eat, talk, move, and work (copy their behaviour and experiment with gestures)

– Dress according to local standards (respect sensibilities and show your cultural sensitivity)

– Buy local products (handy tools as well as works of artisanship)

– Explore local delicacies (home grown produce and regional flavours)

– Choose local lodgings (be it an ashram in India, a traditional inn in China, or an old manor in Europe)

– Take local transportation (such as subways in modern cities or bullock carts in the ancient villages)

– Have the courage to get lost (follow your instincts and make a discovery behind every corner)

– Learn from insiders (eccentric taxi drivers or hipsters in stylish coffee houses, all can be great sources of information)

– Find the places popular with locals (might be a hole-in-the-wall food joint or a fancy lounge cafe)

– Make local friends (delve right into the local community and profit from expert tips)

– Stay away from what you know from home (multinational restaurant chains as well as big brands)

– Dare yourself to try things you have never done before (be prepared to embark on a journey to the unknown, immerse yourself, and broaden your horizons)

Compare Cheap Car Rentals and Choose the Ideal Rental Car

Compare Cheap Car Rentals and Choose the Ideal Rental Car

A great way to save more money is to choose an economical car. The biggest car may not be the best as it may consume more fuel at a much faster rate. So pick something that is small, yet allow you to feel comfortable in.
The best place to book a rented car is through the Internet. The Internet allows you to compare prices before confirming your booking. Car comparison websites allow you to conveniently compare prices between all the major car rental suppliers. So that will certainly help you save money. When comparing price at car comparison websites, be sure to read the reviews as well. Active promotional campaigns are not uncommon on car hiring websites. Do take advantage of these offers if you can. Of course, price is not the only factor that you should compare.
Ask yourself, are you going to spend a lot of time driving? If you think you are going to spend a lot of time in your car, make sure your car is equipped with a good audio system. And remember to bring your own CDs. Safety is always a prime concern if you are traveling with your family. Choose a make and model that comes with airbags.
Service is another area that you can compare. If your rented car breaks down, ask if a back up car will be provided immediately. From the response on the other end, you can usually gauge if the support is top class or not.
Avis offers exclusive offers for members such as discounted weekly rates. Hertz has an extensive network of partners, and these partners usually offer their members all year round discounts when they rent from Hertz. Budget has a logical and attractive rebate system that rewards a customer depending on how frequent they rent. The more they rent, the more discounts they get. Discounts are reflected in monthly car rental statements. Alamo rewards customers who rent cars for leisure and for business. Business customers get guaranteed low rates year-round. Customers get special discounts for leisure travel.
Note that you can compare all you want between car rental vendors, but some things just have nothing to do with the vendors. These are factors that you can do something about. For example, always check the weather first before hiring. Different countries have different climates, and you may want to hire a car that is suitable for a particular climate.
Also, prepare the necessary documents when booking a rental car. Different countries have different qualifications requirements. Most countries allow you to rent cars if you are over 21 and do not have a drink driving record. To enjoy better rates, you must have a clean driving record, and ideally, you should also be a frequent customer of the car rental company.
For a stress free trip, always plan for your transportation needs early. Book a rented car as early as you can to avoid last minute surprises. For your own convenience, hire a car early so that when you arrive at the airport, a car is already waiting for you. If you have special requests like baby seats, these are often available upon request. So make sure you submit your requests so that your rented car comes equipped with the necessary equipment.
Some cars are more environmentally friendly as they are equipped with more advanced technology to reduce emitting CO2 into the environment. Rent these cars if you are conscious about environmental issues. Technology wise, a GPS system will most certainly come in useful as it will help you to navigate on the roads.
Ultimately, your choice of car depends very much what you want to do on your trip. Sometimes, the cheapest car may not be your best choice. Always hire a car based on what you need.

Traveling to Maui on a Budget

Traveling to Maui on a Budget

A FEW WORDS ABOUT MAUI

Just say the word “Maui” and images of tropical breezes, blue ocean waters, sandy beaches and lush foliage come to mind.  All of this is true, and then some.

You will find Maui to be a welcoming, world class vacation destination.  The locals are friendly and helpful and willing to give visitors assistance in getting around their Island.  However, one caution, remember that Hawaii is the 50th state in the United States and the local people do not take kindly to remarks such as “back in the States” and the like.

Travel around Maui is almost all by personal automobile.  There is virtually no public transportation on the island, so renting a car is a must when visiting Maui.  Most of the major car rental companies have operations on Maui with locations at the main airport.  You should be sure to make advance reservations before you get to the island as there are a limited number of cars on the island and if they are all reserved previously you could have a supply problem if you don’t have a reservation.  This is particularly true during the “high” season.  The key to economical car rental is to reserve your car is to shop for a car on line considerably before your trip is scheduled.  Rental rates change frequently, and can vary widely so do your homework.

Maui has a good network of roads covering most of the island.  They are paved and well maintained with traffic control markings and  driving rules as you would have on the mainland.  One thing that you will notice are the street names, which are mainly in Hawiian.  That means that the names will be long and somewhat strange at first.

WHERE TO STAY

A major concern when visiting Maui is deciding where to stay on the Island.  In general you will find that the western side of the island is relatively dry and sunny and is where most of the major resorts and condominimum buildings are located.  Even then, you must also think about if you want to stay “ocean side” or somewhat removed from the shore.  As you would think, Ocean side will be more expensive.  At that you will find accomodations which are “ocean front”, ocean side, ocean view and a lot of more imaginativly described sub divisions.  All that means is that you need to ask, and be sure that you fully understand where your accomodations are relative to the ocean, so you won’t be disappointed when you find that in order to see the ocean from your “ocean view” room, that you have to stick your head out of the window to see it two blocks away.

There are definate tourist seasons on Maui.  In general the “high season” is from December 15th through April 15th.  The rest of the year is the “regular season”.  You will find that during the high season the island is more crowded and some things are from somewhat to very much more expensive.  Lodging is one thing that can sometimes double in price during the high season.

One other option is to reserve accomodations “upcountry”.  That means locating on the side of the extinct volcano, which is in the center of the Island.  This volcano is name Haleakla.  It is about 10,000 feet above sea level and it provides a distintively different experience on Maui.  There is a national park there which, if you enjoy hiking and other outdoor activities could be very enjoyable, and quite economical.

ACTIVITIES

Maui offers all of the world class vacation activities that you can imagine, and some that you never heard about.  You will find no end of activity brochures easily available throughout the island.  Again, to get the most economical actilitys for your travel group you must shop aroung.  There are travel agencies that will gladly recommend and book your reservations for everything from sailing adventures, through submarine rides, through dinner and sunset cruises and luaus.  Here, you can be economical, or you can be extravagant.

Of course, ocean activities play an important part of Island activities.  Maui has many world class beaches, and by law, all are public beaches.  Here you can do everything from simply sun bathing to snorkeling (free stuff) to scuba diving, kayaking, parasailing and much, much more.

SUMMARY

In short, you will find that Maui has something for everyone.  It is called “Magical Maui”, and I am sure that you will be enchanted with your Maui experience and if you are like so many other visitors to the “Valley Island” you will be planning your return visit as soon as you get home from your vacation.
